Gulay Berryman
About the Artist
Gulay Berryman received her art training at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Versailles, France, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan in Italy and the Ecole du Louvre in Paris, France.She has exhibited in France, Iceland, Senegal, Mauritius, Italy, Oman, Belgium, Switzerland, and the United States. These included exhibitions at the American Cultural Center in Reykjavik; the Museum of African Art in Dakar, Senegal; as the official U.S. Participant to the 1992 International Exhibition for Human Rights held at the Slave House on Goree Island, Senegal; the 1992 Dakar Biennale des Arts; the Max Boulle Gallery, Mauritius, and the Salon des Independents, Paris.
In 1996, Gulay received a Winsor & Newton Award in Williamsburg, Virginia. She twice won the American Embassy Paris Art Show (2001-02) and her artwork was selected to grace the cover of the 2003-04 edition of "Bloom Where You’re Planted", a popular expatriate guide to Paris.
In 2005, one of Gulay’s works won the "Best in Show" award in the Best of Virginia art competition sponsored by Kennedy Promotions. In December 2005, she was invited to participate in the Biennale Internazionale dell’ Arte Contemporanea di Firenze, a prestigious international art exhibition in Florence, Italy, which gathers between 800-900 artists selected from around the world to display their work. Gulay exhibited at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York City in December 2006.
Gulay was one of the finalists in the SEETAL 2006 Art Competition organized by Kunst-Forum-International in Meisterschwanden, Switzerland. She held a solo exhibition at the Williamsburg Lodge in September 2006 and at the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center from February 27 to May 22, 2007. In January 2008, Gulay was selected as the inaugural artist for the opening of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance lobby art gallery. In October 2008, one of Gulay's paintings was chosen as the artwork for the official poster of An Occasion for the Arts, Colonial Williamsburg's annual art festival. That same month, she was selected as the cover artist for the 25th Anniversary concert program for the Williamsburg Symphonia.
She has paintings on display at The Gallery on Merchant Square in Williamsburg, Virginia.
